This is a classic novel by Harper Lee and I’m sure most people have read it. I read it when I was about eight for my own enjoyment, but I had to read it for school. I love the story so much, I recommend it to any one who hasn’t read it and to those who already have to read it again. The quote that inspired the title was

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.

For most of the book it centres around Scout and Jem Finch. Through Scout’s eyes we see the stories of Maycomb County unfold. On the blurb of the book it describes Maycomb as being steeped in prejudice, which is quite true. It’s when America is still very deeply racist towards African Americans. In the latter part of the book, it talks about Atticus Finch (Scout and Jem’s father who is a lawyer) and his case defending Tm Robinson against a charge of rape against a white girl. Thats all I’ll tell you for now but I’ll leave you with the blurb:

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.A lawyer’s advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of this enchanting classic – a black man charged with the rape of a white girl.

Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to rave and class in the Deep South of the thirties.

The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocracy is pricked by the stamina of one man’s struggle for justice.

But the weight of history will only tolerate so much…

I must admit I’ve neglected this book. When I stop neglecting it I will probably start it again. So far it seems interesting but the writing is so small it almost seems dry. When I get into the story I’ll get used to it. It is part of the Vintage Classics series. My dad had to pick up some books from the Co-op Bookshop a few months ago and some Vintage Classic books were on special – it was three for $18 or something, so he got them for me. I got Emma and Pride and Prejudice both by Jane Austen (best author ever)! This one is by Henry James. I haven’t read the book yet so I don’t really get the significance of the cover art. This is what the blurb says:

“Isabel Archers main aim in life is to protect her independence. She is not interested in settling down and compromising her freedom for the sake of marriage. However, on a trip around Europe with her aunt, she finds herself captivated by the charming Gilbert Osmond, who is very interested in the idea of adding Isabel to his collection of beautiful artworks…”

Sounds kinda creepy to me…

Hi! I started this blog because I’m really passionate about reading and I know I’m not the only one. I read many types of books, but I prefer teenage fiction, maybe with a hint of fantasy? I’d never really heard of a book blog (although I’m sure that’s because I live under a rock), so I thought why not start my own?
